It is with heavy hearts that we mourn the loss of musical pioneer and legend, Willie Colón. More than just a musician, Willie was a producer, trombonist, composer, and bandleader, leaving a rich legacy behind in everything he touched. He was a key figure in the rise of Latin American Salsa music, spreading not only a passionate sound but a powerful message.

Willie was born in the South Bronx of New York City in 1950. Music was a constant presence in his life. At the age of twelve, he learned how to play the trumpet. Two years later, he decided to switch to the trombone— a decision sparked by his love for the talents of Mon Rivera and Barry Rogers. Willie drew inspiration from the Latin community in the city, as well as his strong Puerto Rican roots and heritage. At just seventeen years old, Willie made his record debut with the album El Malo in 1967.

After making his debut in the music industry, Willie’s career continued to flourish. His unmatched artistry led him to become one of the most successful and recognized salsa artists of his generation. With over thirty million albums sold, five Platinum records, and eleven GRAMMY nominations, Willie received a Lifetime Achievement Award, courtesy of The Latin Recording Academy® in 2004. He also received several accolades from the industry after being inducted into the Latin Music Hall of Fame for his music and songwriting in 2000 and 2019.

Beyond making and producing music, Willie was an extremely active member in the betterment of his community. As a visiting professor at several institutions, Willie received the prestigious CHUBB Fellowship award from Yale University. He was also extremely invested in activism and politics in New York City. Willie served as a special assistant and advisor to NYC mayors, along with running his own political campaigns. He heavily advocated Latin rights and social justice by utilizing his influence on the streets and through his songs.

Willie Colón will forever be remembered as an artist who embedded his heart into every aspect of his work. His legacy will live on, as audiences of every generation discover the vibrant soul and energy that exists within his music.
