Pianist Barnaby Finch is the musical director, with credits ranging from George Benson, Lee Ritenour, Tom Scott, Lionel Richie, and many others. Jazzgrass was put together in 2011 by Barnaby Finch to honor the newer and more progressive side of bluegrass. There’s Lily McCabe on fiddle, a talented young lady with a gorgeous tone who’s also a wonderful singer and featured on quite a few vocal tunes. Don Reed, a famous musician from Idyllwild is on mandolin, dobro, and guitar. Jeremie Levi’s on fiddle, a virtuoso from France who’s a fixture in the Coachella Valley, known for his fiery Gypsy Swing concerts. On bass is Bill Saitta, one of the busiest musicians in the desert area; Jeff Olson on drums, who is also in high demand in the Southern California music scene. Rounding out the band is veteran ace Bob Hamilton, a highly accomplished musician and busy as a first-call guitarist in the desert.

For anyone looking to lose their inhibitions, there’s no better place than an underground speakeasy. Not many ballets open with a comedian (and don’t expect him to work clean), or whiskey sours. Then, watch the explosion as ballet meets the wildest dances of the 1920s and 30s, lit up by a band of LA’s finest jazz musicians playing Duke Ellington, Louis Armstrong, Jelly Roll Morton and Johnny Dodds – jazz greats who knew how to fill a dance floor.

Dale Fielder Quartet Friday, March 7 @ 8:00 pm | $20.00 CD Release performance of the Dale Fielder Quartet’s 24th album, “Blue World.” The release of “Blue World” also coincides with the 30th anniversary of the Dale Fielder Quartet’s first gig on New Year’s Day 1995. The benefit of this long-time alliance is obvious in the relaxed, telepathic-like interaction they maintain, which is one of the factors that allows the group to rise a notch above in a field that abounds in great jazz groups. The DFQ is led by Fielder and ex-Charles Mingus Workshop pianist Jane Getz. It is obvious that Fielder and Getz are both dedicated children of the bebop era. They sound and play with a love, reverence, and authenticity that is striking. The entire band, including bassist Bill Markus and drummer Thomas White, play with an easy swing and a full, “classic” sound that draws the listener in.

New Orleans’ most famous call to action rings true when The Barclay Jazz & Beyond Orchestra returns with a Mardi-Gras-meets-jazz celebration featuring the 19-piece big band, drummer Herlin Riley, and special guest soloists. This program celebrates all that makes a party in the Crescent City remarkable with contemporary second-line music and new arrangements of classic jazz songs.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS

Shelly Berg is an in-demand music director, bandleader, Steinway piano artist and five-time Grammy-nominated arranger, orchestrator, and producer. He is also the artistic director for The Jazz Cruise, and artistic advisor for the Jazz Roots series at the Adrienne Arsht Center in Miami. An award-winning educator with over 40 years of leadership in higher education, Shelly is currently Dean of the Frost School of Music at the University of Miami.

A native of New Orleans, Herlin Riley started on the drums when he was three. He played trumpet through high school, but he went back to drums in college. After graduating he spent three years touring and recording with Ahmad Jamal and has often worked with Wynton Marsalis as a member of the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra and in Wynton’s small jazz groups. He has also worked with George Beson, Harry Connick, Jr., and Marcus Roberts.

The Barclay Jazz & Beyond Orchestra is a premier ensemble comprised of Orange County musicians that is dedicated to exploring jazz and popular music through the creation and presentation of unique and entertaining concert programs. Led by Music Director Shelly Berg, the Barclay Jazz & Beyond Orchestra brings a fresh approach to the genre through new compositions, compelling arrangements of jazz classics and collaboration with world-class guest soloists.

Los Angeles native Jimetta Rose is a force in the independent music scene, blending jazz, R&B, and hip-hop into a sound rooted in SOUL. A gifted singer, songwriter, and poet, her music is a deeply personal journey of vulnerability and strength. She has collaborated with artists such as Erykah Badu, Sa-Ra Creative Partners, Talib Kweli, Meshell Ndegeocello, Bilal, Zap Mama, and Shuggie Otis, among others. Her albums The Barber's Daughter (independently released) and The Light Bearer (executive produced by Georgia Anne Muldrow) showcase her fearless artistry. In 2019, she co-founded The Voices of Creation, a choir dedicated to healing through music, making waves across the scene. With her latest album, The Gift (executive produced by DJ Houseshoes), and more projects on the way, Jimetta Rose continues to captivate and inspire.
