A SUCCESSFUL KJAZZ SUMMER OF JAZZ

Dear Valued KJazz Member,

What a great summer we had at KJazz! GRAMMY award-winning artist Dee Dee Bridgewater helped us kick it off as only Dee Dee can, headlining our Seventh Annual Summer Benefit Concert at Walt Disney Concert Hall.  Opening the show were GRAMMY nominated guitarist/vocalist Raul Midón and critically acclaimed guitarist/vocalist Lionel Loueke, who performed solo and joined forces for several inspiring songs.  It was a wonderful way to start the summer concert season and help raise funds for KJazz.

We were very excited to launch our KJazz Mobile Concert Series in July, in collaboration with The World Stage and Just Jazz, with concerts at historic public libraries as part of The Library Foundation’s Branching Out Series.

Our July KJazz Mobile concert took place at Vermont Square Branch Library, one of L.A.’s oldest branches and one of the rare historic Carnegie libraries, featuring a performance by Sean Harrison & People Musiq.  In August, we featured Joey De Leon and his Peach Pie Trio at the historic Memorial Branch Library in Mid-Wilshire.  Joey De Leon is a member of two GRAMMY award-winning bands — Poncho Sanchez Latin Jazz Band and Gordon Goodwin's Big Phat Band.  Also performing as part of the trio was the very talented guitarist Will Brahm, a graduate of CSULB and a recipient of the KJazz Jazz Studies Scholarship.  We were thrilled to present these two KJazz Mobile concerts with outstanding artists, both established and up-and-coming, and at important locations in the community.  We are looking forward to continuing the KJazz Mobile Concert Series next year and expanding the work we began this summer.

August was a busy month for live music with the Phil Norman Tentet holding a fundraising concert for KJazz at Catalina Bar & Grill, followed by our party to celebrate the release of our own David Benoit’s newest CD David Benoit and Friends at the Steinway Piano Gallery in Beverly Hills.

As we wind down the busy summer concert season, we are looking forward to our 10th annual Jingle Jazz Concert on Sunday, December 8th at 4pm at the El Rey Theatre in Los Angeles featuring Jose Rizo's Mongorama!  Not only is this a big anniversary for Jingle Jazz but we’ll also be celebrating Jose Rizo’s upcoming 30th anniversary on KJazz.  Limited tickets and information are available at www.jazzandblues.org.

I do want to acknowledge it is your generous support of KJazz that enables your Southern California jazz and blues station to sponsor these live concerts that feature both legends as well as up-and-coming performers, inspire the next generation of jazz musicians through our scholarships (as well as our internships), and share our love for this music with the community.  We are grateful for you, our loyal supporters, and look forward to providing you with more fantastic jazz, blues, and Latin jazz in our community, on 88.1 FM and online at www.jazzandblues.org.

Yours in jazz and blues,

Stephanie Levine
