Jazz Nigth with MishCatt & Friends

Vera's Heartbeat proudly presents a special jazz night with MishCatt, the artistic pseudonym and alter ego of Costa Rican singer Michelle Gonzalez. MishCat will interpret jazz standards with local musicians: Mika Mutti on keys, John Leftwich on bass, and Lucio Vieira on drums.

Daughter of jazz composer José González and actress and singer Rosanna Telford, Gonzalez’ childhood was filled with art. The artists she listened to as a child, Ella Fitzgerald, João Gilberto, Nat King Cole, Diana Krall, and Chet Baker, remain her biggest inspirations.

She began performing with her father as a teenager, singing jazz and bossa nova at his shows around Costa Rica. She then formed her Costa Rica-based pop band Patterns, before departing to focus on solo music.

With her 2016 EP Highlighter, she quickly became the most played Costa Rican artist in the history of Spotify, getting more than 6 million plays in less than two months and has since has received more than 30 million streams. "Another Dimension" on Highlighter hit number 17 on the Swedish Heatseeker chart. While MishCatt describes Highlighter as a space pop sound, the blue whale show will showcase her jazz side and reflect her interest in exploring the colors, shapes and textures in music; jazz is the genre that makes her whole.

How Michelle became MishCatt began one day in Europe when she intentionally missed her flight home. She had met Prince Charles Philippe d’Orléans, Duke of Anjou, in her hometown in Costa Rica, and he had invited her to perform at one of the most premier cultural events in Portugal. The day of her return flight home, she decided to buy a guitar and busk around Europe instead, in hopes of charging her creativity by the need of survival.

Her music and art carried her through Belgium, Denmark, France, London, Spain, and ended in Sweden. Every time she went to perform or busk, she carried paper and markers and engage with the people she met by making art. She says “When you get in a creative mode, we forget about who we are in society and what our fears are, we become like kids again. You are 100% intuitive when you improvise, and by doing that, everything flows,” MishCatt in an interview with VoyageLA. From there Michelle became MishCatt: Mish reflecting who she was born as, and Catt as the intuition and unharnessed creativity she connected with in Europe. She currently resides in Los Angeles, CA.
