Lucy Woodward & Jane Monheit with The Dave Richards Big Band
DESCRIPTION Meet Lucy:
Fresh out of school, she was singing jazz on Bleecker Street for tips, singing in cover bands and writing songs before signing with Atlantic Records—a time period that saw her score a Top 40 hit with “Dumb Girls” and another Top 5 hit she co-wrote for Stacie Orrico called “(There's Gotta Be) More to Life’, earning her 2 BMI Awards. Having no desire to be a pop starlet: her follow-up, the jazzier Lucy Woodward is...Hot and Bothered was released which led her to record Hooked! (Verve). In 2016, she released Til They Bang On The Door (GroundUP/Verve) and was featured on Snarky Puppy’s Family Dinner, Vol. 1 album, while touring on and off with them for many years. In addition to her solo career, Woodward has recorded or performed live with Rod Stewart, Chaka Khan, Celine Dion, Nikka Costa, Carole King, Snarky Puppy and Joe Cocker.
At the young age of 20, Jane became first runner-up in the 1998 Thelonious Monk Institute’s vocal competition behind the late, great Teri Thornton. Soon after, Jane released her stunning debut album, Never Never Land, featuring Kenny Barron, Ron Carter, and Lewis Nash. With her new album, The Songbook Sessions: Ella Fitzgerald—the first to be released on her own Emerald City Records—the Long Island native has surprised even herself with her artistic leap. Jane had thought about recording an Ella tribute for a long time. Fitzgerald’s beloved songbook albums held “Biblical” importance for her when she was growing up and have never lost their hold on her. On this new offering, Monheit pays joyous tribute to Ella while sharing a definitive portrait of herself, guided by her producer, arranger, and trumpet great, Nicholas Payton.
Lucy & Jane will be joining The Dave Richards Big Band for a night of swingin' tunes!
