NFMLA Celebrates Women's History Month - Film Festival - March 25th 2017
DESCRIPTION
n honor of Women’s History Month, NFMLA presents another installment of its InFocus series, InFocus: Female Directors. The first film program of the evening presents brilliant meditations on lost love, regret, happiness and the underlying, relentless force of time. These talented female directors give us stories depicting everything from loss of innocence tales to dark comedies about psychotic soccer moms.

Our second film program also centers on female directors. This block of shorts features a powerful documentary that accentuates important social and domestic issues without pulling any punches, an earnest comedy about what it’s like to be eclipsed professionally by a best friend, a drama that wittingly spotlights the age when one must choose between their parents’ expectations and their own personal dreams, and so much more.

Closing out the evening is a third shorts program featuring riveting character-driven dramas from Switzerland, Belgium, and the USA, which are all dynamic as well as visually stunning.

Throughout the night, you will have the opportunity to mingle with the filmmakers, industry supporters and film lovers over cocktails and beats at the filmmakers’ lounge adjacent to the private entry of the South Park Center’s 500 seat theater in Downtown Los Angeles.

Tickets are only $5 for single film programs and $15 for all films with open bar.

The Ethan Sultry Group
DESCRIPTION
The Ethan Sultry Band — After living and performing among the Gypsy Flamenco circuit in Seville, Spain for more than a decade, guitarist/composer/vocalist Ethan Sultry (Margolis) brings his edgy Flamenco Jazz hybrid to the Blue Whale on Thursday, March 30. His latest iTunes featured album, Sonikete Blues is an incredibly unique take on previous journeys by artists such as Miles Davis, Chick Corea, John Coltrane, Nat King Cole and Paco de Lucía, as they investigated the relationships between Jazz and Blues with Spanish music... specifically the music of Andalucía.

Joining Ethan Sultry for a thrilling evening of where flamenco and jazz meet are Reggie Hamilton on bass; Katisse Buckigham on flute and sax; Munyungo Jackson on percussion; and Donald Barrett on drums.

Nylon guitarist/vocalist/bandleader, Ethan Sultry (Margolis), lived in Spain for more than a decade. In 2010 he moved to Los Angeles and formed his world quintet whose primary focus is on the open and improvisational space that jazz and flamenco music share. Dissonant chording and pursuit of unique groove patterns are part of his signature. Highly influenced by his mentors within the Gypsy circuit of Andalucía, Sultry’s hybrid compositions reflect the intricate phrasings of his instrumental and vocal melodies. His 2014 release entitled Soleangeles and his 2016 release Sonikete Blues were both featured by iTunes in several countries. Sultry has collaborated with Bill Watterson (Calvin and Hobbes), dancer El Farru, Spanish flamenco guitarist Paco de Lucía, Judith Hill (20 feet from stardom), and is a featured soloist on Omar Faruk Tekbilek's newest album. Sultry has performed as a soloist around the world and has been featured on All About Jazz, LA Weekly, Los Angeles Times, and the New York Times.

Reggie Hamilton (bass) has toured and/or recorded with a wide array of artists including Seal, Eros Ramazzotti, Babyface, Thalia, Queen Latifah, Billy Childs, Christina Aguilera, Anita Baker, Bette Midler, George Duke, Whitney Houston, Stanley Clarke, David Lynch, John Mellencamp, Warren Zevon, Mariah Carey, Tina Turner and many, many others.

Katisse Buckingham (tenor/alto/soprano saxophones, flute/alto flute, and spoken word) has performed and/or recorded with the Yellowjackets, Prince, Billy Childs, Dr. Dre, Herbie Hancock, Roy Ayers, Andy Summers, Zawinul Legacy Band, Airto & Flora Purim, L.A. Guitar Quartet, Brian Auger, Amos Lee, Strunz & Farah, Colin Hay, Poncho Sanchez, Don Grusin, Pete Yorn, and Vanessa Paradis, among many others. He has played on numerous film soundtracks including the "Jazz Flute" scene from the Will Ferrell film, Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy, the Golden Globe winning score to the Robert Redford film, All Is Lost, and is a featured soloist on the Universal Pictures animated film Minions.

Munyungo Jackson is a seasoned percussionist who has performed with Miles Davis, Stevie Wonder, Sting, Kenny Loggins, Herbie Hancock, Dianne Reeves, the Zawinul Syndicate, George Howard, Ronnie Laws, The Temptations, Four Tops, The Supremes, Bennie Maupin, Bill Summers, Marcus Miller, & dozens of others, including numerous ethnic music & dance troupes.

Donald Barrett is the first call drummer for artists such as Toni Braxton, Sade, Seal, New Kids On The Block, Pussycat Dolls, and Colbie Caillat, to name a few. He has also bolstered his session work by appearing on five Josh Kelley albums, the Twilight "Breaking Dawn" Movie Soundtrack, This Christmas Movie Soundtrack, Kikaider Reboot (Japanese action movie), as well as Macy Gray's “The Way” album and has appeared on the MTV Music Awards, Teen Choice Awards, Hart Of Dixie, The Ellen Show, Oprah, Cold Case, All My Children, George Lopez Show, Braxton Family Values, David Letterman, Tonight Show with Jay Leno, Craig Ferguson, Live with Kelly and Michael, Good Morning America, and the Today Show. Barrett was also the house drummer for "Last Call with Carson Daly" for 3 years.

Alice in Wonderland
DESCRIPTION
Celebrating, exploring, and uniting Middle Eastern and Western dance for the 21st century, Los Angeles-based Bellydance Evolution presents Alice in Wonderland at El Portal MainStage Theatre in North Hollywood on Saturday, April 1, 2017 at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, April 2 at 4:30 p.m., launching a west coast tour which continues on to Everett and Tacoma, WA and Portland, OR. Bellydance Evolution founder and world renowned choreographer Jillina Carlano created a revolutionary approach to the whimsical and magical tale, re-imagining the colorful, iconic - and dare some say, "mad" - characters through the language of world fusion dance. Presenting theatrical dance shows with a storyline, much like a ballet, Bellydance Evolution features a cast of 20 international performers who are passionate about their art in the fields of Middle Eastern dance and music, break dance, theatrical hip-hop, contemporary, tribal and fusion dance, each bringing their own unique vision to the production.

Bellydance Evolution’s Alice in Wonderland promises to take the audience on a spectacular journey that will excite both mainstream audiences and dance enthusiasts. Based on the Alice in Wonderland book, the performance is appropriate for all ages. Performing to sold-out crowds in over twenty countries spanning North and South America, Europe, Africa, Asia and Australia, Bellydance Evolution recently performed in Morocco with the Orchestra Philharmonic de Morocco in an "East meets West" collaboration performance and performed a 28 city, 35-performance tour of China.

“I am so excited to perform in my hometown of Los Angeles again with the return of Alice in Wonderland. We have performed this show throughout Asia, Europe, South Africa and Morocco and are thrilled to share Alice in Wonderland in Los Angeles, Oregon and Washington State this April,” exclaimed Carlano.

In conjunction with the Alice in Wonderland performances in North Hollywood, Bellydance Evolution offers several Workshops “I Follow Rivers: A Tribal Fusion Lovely with a Hint of Jazz!,” “Mystery in Movement,” “Performance Skillz: The Emotional Exploration of Dance,” “The Art of Playing the Darbuka,” and “Thunder Drum.” These classes are available individually or as an entire package. More information can be found on the Bellydance Evolution website.

Alice in Wonderland stars Jillina Carlano (Queen of Hearts), Heather Aued (Alice), Sharon Kihara (The Caterpillar), Rin Ajna (The Mad Hatter), Ellyott Colon (The White Rabbit), and Ozzy Ashkenazi (The Chef).

Continuing the successful formula established by past productions such as Immortal Desires and Dark Side of the Crown, Bellydance Evolution ensemble performs to a theatrical score commissioned from film and television composer Paul Dinletir, owner/director of Los Angeles-based ‘audiomachine’, who has written and produced trailer music for The Hobbit, Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End and Avatar, and the music for the opening ceremonies of the last two Summer Olympics.

Bellydance Evolution was created with a mission to unite Eastern and Western culture through dance and this intention is evident in the works of the company through their education and residency programs. Together, these initiatives celebrate the dynamic aesthetics of world fusion dance, culture and creativity, by sharing the joy of dance with all communities. With the success of their residency program, Bellydance Evolution has established ensemble company members in the USA, Europe, Asia and Latin America, which allows this large scale production to perform all over the globe. In addition to this specialized performance program, principal cast members offer seminars that are open to all people in the community, giving dancers and non-dancers alike an opportunity to learn about this diverse and important cultural art form from accomplished masters in the field.

Jillina Carlano, Founder, Executive/Artistic Director (The Queen of Hearts) is a performer, master instructor, choreographer, director and producer, Jillina has devoted her life to dance. Jillina pulls from a strong dance background in Middle Eastern, folklore, jazz, ballet, and hip hop to create a colorful Middle Eastern fusion repertoire. She travels extensively, teaching seminars and performing in concerts worldwide. Jillina has co-produced 12 instructional DVDs, which are now offered in five different languages and distributed by Universal Records. In the summer of 2009 and 2010, Jillina was the first American to be invited as a featured performer in the prestigious closing gala at the Ahlan Wa Sahlan festival in Egypt. Jillina is the owner of Evolution Dance Studios, located in Universal City, California, USA.

Paul Dinletir, Music Composer, is the co-founder and lead composer for ‘audiomachine’, a boutique, motion picture advertising music production collective, specializing in original epic music and bone crunching sound design for theatrical trailers, television commercials and video game advertising campaigns. Since 2005, Paul has had his music place in countless feature film trailers and can be heard daily on television, radio and the internet, including the music for the past two Summer Olympics Opening Ceremonies. To create his signature sound, Paul records with the world’s top orchestras and musicians in exclusive spaces such as Skywalker Ranch and Air Studios of London. He has composed exclusive music for blockbuster campaigns such as The Hobbit, Avatar, Life of Pi, Hunger Games, 300 and Snow White and the Huntsman. In creating original scores for Bellydance Evolution, Paul composes and records an emotional, dramatic soundtrack. He works side by side with the artistic director to bring the show to life and is an integral part of the creative process.

Alice in Wonderland has two performances: Saturday, April 1, 2017 at 7:30 p.m.; and Sunday, April 2, 2017 at 4:30 p.m. Tickets range from $13–$39. NewFilmmakers Los Angeles (NFMLA) Celebrates British Cinema - Film Festival - April 15th, 2017
DESCRIPTION
To kick-start our April 15th film festival, we’re screening the documentary “Desert Around Me: The ADHD Epidemic, a Challenge of Global Proportions.” The film follows a team as they prepare for an ultra marathon in the Sahara Desert, which serves to raise awareness to the ADHD community.

In the second film program of the night, NFMLA presents “InFocus: British Cinema,” which shines a spotlight on upcoming directors and producers from the United Kingdom. “Bobby Sands: 66 Days” is a documentary, which follows the story of activist Bobby Sands’ hunger strike and the resulting impact on British-Irish relations. Following that, is a short film block, which centers on portrayals of family and friendship, posing questions about identity and internal conflict. These emerging directors illuminate the diverse range of the human experience, from a veteran’s struggle with PTSD to the strained reconciliation between a young woman and her mother.

In the final program of the night, we take you on a journey throughout the United States. These shorts feature of a variety of film genres from dark comedies to suspenseful thrillers to somber Westerns. We follow a border agent’s attempt to try and resolve a messy situation, a man’s journey to find his life’s treasure, and a story about two young girls struggling to survive in the world.

Walking for Prader-Willi Syndrome
DESCRIPTION
Prader-Willi syndrome is the most common genetic cause of obesity. Symptoms in childhood include weak muscles and feeding difficulties. After age two, symptoms change to include growth failure, Autism-like behavior problems, and a drive to eat that is never satisfied no matter how much food is eaten. No known medication reduces the insatiable appetite and parents must lock their food just to keep their child safe. If you suspect someone you love has PWS, contact the Prader-Willi California Foundation at PWCF.org or attend the Walk event on April 30 at Griffith Park. There’s no cure yet, but there is help.
