"In2uition"

CATHY SEGAL-GARCIA

featuring:

Otmaro Ruiz // Karen Hammack //Calabria Foti

Josh Nelson // Bevan Manson

Gary Fukushima // Jane Getz

(missing this evening, but on the CD, are

Llew Mathews, Vardan Ovsepian, and John Beasley, Dave Moscoe)

Boston-bred, Cathy Segal Garcia loved jazz since the age of 5, Her dad was a sax player, mom and twin sisters were singers.

The sisters started singing with their dad’s bands in their early teens. In the early '70s, at Berklee College of Music for flute and Arranging & Composition, she embraced a mixture of cool jazz, modern jazz, and funk,

developing a love of rhythm, melody and harmony.

Cathy moved to San Francisco, and then L.A. in late 1975. One of the things that impressed many colleagues, fans and critics over the years, is that she has consistently worked at her craft. Performing with literally hundreds of musicians, both locally and internationally known, their style ranges from straight ahead to modern jazz.

She is the founder & co-founder of many jazz related organizations, including the Producer of Saturday Night Jazz DTLA.

She is known and supported for being a mover and shaker for the L.A. jazz scene.

Cathy has 9 previous CDs, which includes some well known musicians, such as Russell Ferrante, Peter Erskine, Marc Johnson,

Joe Diorio, Phillip Strange, Cho Yoonseung, Ted Greene, Ross Tompkins.

With her 10th CD, she has recorded mostly duos, with some of her favorite pianists in the world, 7 of the 10 from the CD

will be performing live tonight in Bar Fedora!

“A model of warm, exquisitely focused jazz vocalizing...sensuous voice and cool harmonies.” Don Heckman..... L.A. Times

“When the Sirens, in the days of ancient Greece, enticed sailors with their song, at least one of them must have sounded like Cathy Segal-Garcia...the clear, cool, perfectly pitched Segal-Garcia voice.” David Nathan ...... Hofacre’s JazzNews

“Songs that are stripped bare of the more commercialized pretentiousness of the music industry for tunes that have a unique story and artist to make sure the story is told. N.P.R jazz. The vibe of artistic integrity coupled with honest emotion for a captivating experience.” Critical Review....on “Bohemian”

THE DEVIL’S MUSIC: THE LIFE AND BLUES OF BESSIE SMITH
DESCRIPTION
Rubicon Theatre Company celebrates Black History Month with THE DEVIL’S MUSIC: THE LIFE AND BLUES OF BESSIE SMITH, starring singer and actress Miche Braden of the original Off-Broadway production (named one of the 10 Best Off-Broadway productions of the year by the N.Y. Daily Times). Described by CBC as a, “bawdy, bluesy, boozy rollicking night out at the theatre,” the show follows the life, loves and career of blues and jazz singer Bessie Smith, called the “Empress of the Blues.”

THE DEVIL’S MUSIC: THE LIFE AND BLUES OF BESSIE SMITH is conceived and directed by Joe Brancato of Penguin Rep, and written by Angelo Parra. Set in 1937 in Memphis, Bessie and her musicians have been turned away from performing at a “Whites-Only” theatre, then finding a hospitable gin joint where Bessie recounts her incredible journey from an impoverished childhood in Chattanooga, to her fortuitous rise as a show-stopping singer. Laughter, pathos and music all come together to deliver an electric, entertaining and surprisingly touching evening in which Bessie sings signature songs such as “I Ain’t Got Nobody,” “St. Louis Blues,” “Baby Doll” and “T’ain’t Nobody’s Bizness If I Do.” Braden is joined by musicians Gerard Gibbs on Piano, Anthony Nelson Jr. on Sax and James Hankins on Bass. Gibbs also plays Pickle, who serves as narrator and guide at times, while coaxing Bessie to tell her story.

Says Rubicon Producing Artistic Director Karyl Lynn Burns, “We are thrilled to celebrate Black History Month with this triumphant and turbulent story about a woman whose life was as large and as outrageous as her talent. She was unapologetically herself and carved out a unique place in history, influencing and inspiring hundreds of notable artists who followed her (including Janis Joplin, who bought the tombstone for Bessie’s unmarked grave.”

THE DEVIL’S MUSIC: THE LIFE AND BLUES OF BESSIE SMITH opens in Ventura on Saturday, February 25 at 7:00 p.m., followed by a post-show party with cast, crew and local VIPs at NOW Ventura. Low-priced previews are February 22-24. The show runs Wednesdays through Sundays through March 12, 2017. For tickets, go to www.rubicontheatre.org or call (805) 667-2900.

Lorraina Marro, honored as a Jazz Living Legend in July of 2015, is authentically original in every area of creativity. Born and raised in Los Angeles, California, Lorraina Marro has made her mark as a classy, sophisticated and talented jazz vocalist, who is passionate about her music and committed to interpreting songs in her own style.

In February of 2015, she released her first all-original cd "Mixed Emotions," in which she serves as lyricist on all of the songs; sharing life's experiences, the highs and lows of love evolving and ever-changing.

Lorraina has performed her own shows at The Metropolitan Room and Danny's Skylight Room in New York; and has performed shows at multiple venues in Los Angeles, including The E Spot Lounge at Vitello's Restaurant, The Catalina Jazz Club, Preston’s, The House of Blues, Nola’s LA, The M Bar, The Hollywood Studio Bar & Grill, The Holly St. Bar & Grill, The Cinegrill, The Gardenia, The Bel Age Hotel, the Marriott Hotels, and Wyndham Hotels.
