Sylvia Brooks CD Release Concert of ‘The Arrangement’ Feat. Christian Jacob, Otmaro Ruiz, Quinn Johnson and Jeff Colella
DESCRIPTION
From Jazz Noir to Technicolor, jazz vocalist Sylvia Brooks reveals a vivid array of new emotional hues on her about to be released third CD, The Arrangement, a beautifully intimate collaboration with the talents of brilliant Los Angeles arrangers. In celebration of the release, Brooks along with her arrangers will perform in concert at Catalina Jazz Club in Hollywood on Wednesday, June 7 at 8:30 p.m.

With her first two critically acclaimed albums, jazz vocalist Brooks introduced a sensuous jazz-noir sound redolent of femme fatales and tough guys, crooked deals and deep-shadowed urban nightscapes. But no great artist wants to be typecast, and with her third CD, The Arrangement, she steps out of the mist and fog into the sunlight, where she reveals herself as a singer at home in just about any narrative.

Brooks chose to connect with a superlative collection of arrangers for her third CD starting with arranger/composer/saxophone Kim Richmond, who also collaborated on her first two albums; Venezuelan-born pianist Otmaro Ruiz (Dianne Reeves); pianist Jeff Colella (Lou Rawls); French-born pianist Christian Jacob (Tierney Sutton, Betty Buckley); and pianist Quinn Johnson (Steve Tyrell, Diana Ross).

When an artist succeeds in a particular niche she always faces pressure to repeat the performance, but Brooks had no intention of limiting herself. “I wanted to explore different musical styles,” she says. “I love Latin influenced music, big band swing, and rich ballads. I want to explore the whole spectrum musically.” With a sumptuous velvet-rich voice and emotionally incisive phrasing, Brooks is far too protean a talent to be confined to any particular plotline. In creating The Arrangement, she didn’t just set out to investigate different moods and rhythms. She invited a dazzling cast of writers to craft bespoke charts tailored stylishly for her voice, while giving them casting carte blanche, an act of trust that led to a project marked by a glorious diversity of settings.

Slated to perform:

Vocals: Sylvia Brooks
Piano/Arrangers: Christian Jacob, Otmaro Ruiz, Quinn Johnson, Jeff Colella
Bass: Sezin Ahmet Turkmenoglu
Drums: Aaron Serfaty
Saxophone/Flute: Jeff Driskill, Glen Berger
Trumpet/Flugelhorn: Ron Stout
Trombone: Juliane Gralle
Guitar: Will Brahm

Christian McBride June 10 at Miniaci Theater
DESCRIPTION

South Florida JAZZ, the area’s premier modern jazz organization, concludes its star-studded 25th Anniversary celebration season by presenting world-renowned bassist Christian McBride with his cryptically named trio Tip City. The performance will take place on Saturday, June 10, 2017 at 8:00 p.m. in the Rose & Alfred Miniaci Performing Arts Center on the Nova Southeastern University campus, 3100 Ray Ferrero Jr Blvd, Davie 33314. Tickets are $40 ($10 for students under age 25 with valid I.D.) and can be purchased from Ticketmaster either online via southfloridajazz.org or by calling 954-462-0222.

Bassist Christian McBride is one of those bigger-than-life artists who just burst onto the music scene seemingly in full bloom. His father and great uncle, both well-known Philadelphia bassists, mentored him early. Half of a lifetime ago, by his 21st birthday, he was a remarkably mature player and rapidly becoming everyone's favorite young acoustic bassist of the 1990s. Christian’s huge sound and prodigious technique, both with plucked and bowed solos, recall the legendary Ray Brown and particularly Paul Chambers. He actually started on electric bass when he was eight and took R&B gigs in high school, but by then he was getting more interested in jazz and playing the acoustic bass. Five Grammys later, he now plays both in a variety of settings.

Featuring: Christian McBride – bass, Emmet Cohen - piano, Mark Whitfield - guitar.

Funding for South Florida JAZZ is provided in part by grant from the Broward County Board of County Commissioners as recommended by the Broward Cultural Division

NewFilmmakers Los Angeles (NFMLA) Film Festival-June 24th, 2017
DESCRIPTION
NewFilmmakers Los Angeles is proud to present another month of incredible independent film talent. Join us on Saturday, June 24th, as we start the night with an eccentric film program. We are screening five short films that cover a wide range of narratives from a lonely girl trying to find her voice in the world to a 100-year-old woman rebelling against her aging daughter’s demands.

Our next program of the night presents the 1st of 2 InFocus: LGBTQ Cinema Film Programs. This shorts program focuses on stories of love, connection and reconciliation by both local filmmakers and international talents from China and Brazil.

Closing the evening is the second LGBTQ shorts program that revolves around conflicts of identity, community and family. This program’s stories include a serial killer on the hunt for love, millennials who decide to get their lives together after one last night of debauchery and four misfits who make the world their stage.

These 2 shorts programs illuminate a wide range of the LGBTQ experience, contrasting with the common one-dimensional portrayals of LGBTQ characters. These emerging directors give more representation to the LGBTQ community by humanizing their characters and relating them to their audiences.

Throughout the event, attendees will have opportunities to mingle with the filmmakers, industry supporters and film lovers with an open bar at the filmmakers’ lounge adjacent to the private entry of the South Park Center’s 500 seat theater in Downtown Los Angeles.

Tickets are only $5 for single film programs and $15 for all films with open bar.
